School Library Journal Review

Gr 2-5-A knowledge of economics helps children better understand money management and the financial interdependence that keeps society running smoothly. This series teaches young viewers important economic principles in a clear, well-organized manner. What Is Economics? offers a basic overview of the topic, which is expanded in the rest of the series. In Savings, Spending & Investing Money, children learn about the evolution of economics from barter to the creation of different types of currency throughout the world. Money management, including budgeting and banking, are also covered. U.S. Industries and Resources provides a good overview of the free enterprise system, renewable and non-renewable resources, and domestic and international trade. Viewers learn the basics of entrepreneurship in Starting a Business as they follow four youngsters who plan and operate a cookie business. Marketing research, financing, resources, distribution, and more are covered. The live-action series (with a little simple animation) stars four culturally diverse children and an adult who plays Jack Greenback-a humorously stereotypical reporter presenting breaking news that expands on the topics. There's a lot of new vocabulary here, but it is clearly defined in context. Examples used throughout the series are kid-friendly and easy to understand, even when dealing with topics such as "opportunity cost." The series clearly explains how banking works, how to use an ATM, different types of resources, business strategies, and how to use money management to save for desired purchases. Viewers also clearly see how math skills apply to economics. It's a lot of material to present, but the series does an excellent job of covering the basics in a way most young viewers will understand. A terrific introduction to the topics.-Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary School, Federal Way, WA (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
